Increased risk of harmful gases in shipping containers

More than 10% of shipping containers contain harmful air. The evaporation of solvents and raw materials from the goods spells danger in more than half of these cases. Scarcely ventilated containers are packed with goods, and a cocktail of hazardous gases accumulates inside.

Health impairment from inhaling gases and vapours

Inhaling chemicals can cause various health effects. Sometimes they are acute, but that is not the case for most substances. It has been scientifically proven however, that such substances can cause serious conditions in the long term such as respiratory ailments, asthma, allergies, autoimmune diseases, Parkinson’s, hearing loss, impaired vision, paralysis, brain damage, dementia, cancer, leukaemia, and organ failure.

Legal exposure limits

Employees who work in such containers run serious health risks. Legal exposure limits or thresholds have consequently been set to protect them which may not be exceeded under any circumstances.

When multiple substances are present in the air, the total risk is the sum of the risks from each. As various chemicals are present simultaneously in shipping containers, all have to be identified and compared with their respective limits in order to determine the total risk. That is why we at Arizo developed the R.A.CH.E.L method.

Quick gas measurements with the R.A.CH.E.L. method

With the R.A.CH.E.L. method, an air sample is taken from the container without physically opening it. The air sample is immediately analysed using FTIR, an analysis technique that can detect all chemical substances.

A patented program flawlessly identifies and measures all substances present, allowing the total risk to be determined in less than five minutes.

You also receive a certificate listing all risks. This enables the recipient of the goods to protect their employees, and gives the producer precise information to adjust their processes.
