Working safely in land tanks

Also known as ‘liquid bulk,’ storage tanks or shore tanks, the massive cylindrical land tanks crop up like mushrooms in ports. High concentrations of harmful fumes can accumulate in these enclosed spaces leading to explosion risks or a hazardous atmosphere inside the tank.

Land tanks must be inspected on a regular basis and cleaned and repaired as and when necessary. Specialised expertise is required to do this safely and we at Arizo have this expertise in house.

Legal thresholds

The atmosphere inside a land tank must be harmless before it can be entered safely. Your workers should therefore not be exposed to concentrations that exceed legally stipulated thresholds.

The legal thresholds are set per chemical substance.  If there are multiple chemicals in the air, the total risk is the sum of the risks of each different substance. It is therefore necessary to measure all the substances present in order to assess the total risk.

An Arizo employee measures the atmosphere in a tank park.

Inspections by certified gas experts

Cargos are often complex, so a simple EX/OX/TOX measurement will not suffice to meet all the legal safety requirements. Specialists must be called in to assess the safety of land tanks. Our accredited gas experts make sure that all the legal safety standards are met.

We at Arizo therefore conduct a thorough risk analysis before workers enter a land tank. We communicate appropriate safety standards to ensure that the manhole or fire watch can monitor safety correctly while work is being carried out. Our 24/7 service ensures that these inspections are seamlessly attuned to the schedule of your operations.
