Bulk ship gas measurement

Arizo carries out gas measurements on bulk ships for bulk terminals, shipping companies, shipping agents, dockworkers, and prevention advisors.

Gas measurements on bulk ships

Dealing with toxic gases on bulk ships is not by no means self-evident. A safety measurement is performed before dockworkers enter the cargo holds of a bulk ship. As in the case with containers , different gases may be present depending on the cargo and production method. Simply measuring for O2, CO, H2S, and LEL is not enough here. A proper safety measurement is based on a comprehensive risk analysis. Arizo conducts risk analyses and gas measurements to ensure the safety of dockworkers.

Guarantee safety

The safety of port workers is supported by the CEPA guidelines with safety instructions. On the other hand, the Codex, which mandates exposure measurements, also applies to bulk ships. As an employer, you must perform these measurements regularly to ensure the health of your employees. Do not compromise on safety.

Causes of gases and vapours

  • Decrease in oxygen due oxidation processes such as with wood pellets
  • Evaporation of harmful substances from cargo, such as carbon disulphide from lead concentrate
  • Accumulation of explosive gases through chemical processes such as hydrogen in iron
  • Formation of toxic gases from carbo combustion such as SO2 from zinc concentrate

Consequences

  • Disruption of your logistical flow and potential additional costs
  • Acute incident such as death, fainting or explosion
  • Irreparable long-term damage to the nervous and immune systems, organ failure, increased risk of cancer, reproductive impairment

The solution: Arizo’s 24/7 service

The gases/vapours in the cargo holds of bulk ships accumulate more easily in a closed hold and can reach very high.  This can harm those entering when the holds are opened and unloaded. — Tom Bonneux, Managing Director of Arizo.

  • Arizo carries out gas-free inspections in accordance with the latest regulations and threshold limits.
  • We determine whether and how harmful the cargo is with a risk analysis in our own laboratory, so that the hatches containing the cargo can be cleared for entry.
  • Our team of gas experts is available 24/7 to ensure that your logistics process is not delayed due to unpredictable circumstances, such as rain.
